What Oregon's Spring Game Showed

Darron Thomas will look to take on more
of a leadership role this upcoming season.
In the Oregon Ducks spring game a few things became apparent that coach Kelly needs to figure out.  First it was clear that the Oregon Ducks will have some fresh faces at the wide receiver position this up coming up season because of the departure of Maehl and Davis' departure.  This will be a very raw and inexperienced group that will be led by Tuinei, the only senior in the group.  Josh Huff, who has been injured during most of spring practice, will be the field stretcher for Darron Thomas and looks to be on the verge of having a huge season and breaking out on the national scene. Besides these two receivers the group gets a bit foggy.

Vaughn could be the new comer who makes
an early impact for the Ducks in 2011.
So far this spring Nick Cole has had a coming out party, and multiple coaches have praised his incredible improvement.  One coach said he could be the surprise of the year.  Blake Stanton, a red shirt freshmen, has started to become a consistent pass catcher and Justin Hoffman is also proving himself as the spring moves forward.  There is also the foursome of highly touted freshmen that will be arriving next season.  Tacoi Sumler, B.J. Kelley, Rashaan Vaughn and Devon Blackmon are all speedsters who have track like speed.  Sumler is the fastest of the bunch recording a blazing 4.24 forty yard dash.  Vaughn seems to have the best  shot of seeing the field next season, as Chip Kelly has called him possibly the best junior college  wide out in the nation.

Colt Lyerla had a big game, repeatedly catching balls in traffic on route to 9 catches and 37 yards.  Lyerla looks like he will play the h-back position, and it is hard to believe he was in high school only a few months ago. David Paulson also had a good showing, making a few nice runs after the catch.  If the wide receivers are a little slow out of the gate, it looks like these two could help out Thomas out a lot.

Forde surprised and impressed coaches at the spring game.
Kelly will have to decide who will be the 3rd back behind the Heisman candidate James and his star back up Barner.  Lache Seastrunk, Oregon's 2010 star recruit, had his share of struggles while competing for the third string position and was out played by fellow redshirt freshman Ayele Forde.  I expect Seastrunk to fill the position when all is said and done, but it is good to know that the backfield is secure for many seasons to come with Seastrunk, Forde, and newcomer De'Anthony Thomas.

The offensive line also needs to work on their consistency. Thankfully, there is still a whole summer ahead for Chip Kelly to work this group into shape.  They did however look very good on LaMichael Jame's 67 yard touchdown run.  Overall, the offense looked alright, but the defense took the show.

Dion Jordan looks like he is
ready to become the next defensive
star for the Ducks.
On the defensive side there were a lot of positives and not many negatives.  Two young corners had interceptions, Terrence Mitchell and Erick Dargan.  The young defensive line also looked very capable of becoming play makers.  Cliff Harris and John Boyett are the two stars of the secondary while the front seven is still up for grabs.  Dion Jordan is a physical beast who looks to be on the rise.  Kelly will have to do some work replacing Kiko Alonso after his arrest late Saturday night.  Overall this group looked like it will be stronger than last year.

Potential Ducks Starting LB Alonso Suspended Indefinitely

Kiko's mugshot
The night after Oregon's successful spring game entertained 43,000 Ducks fans was marred by the arrest of Kristian 'Kiko' Alonso, a linebacker who was poised to take the place of Casey Matthews.  This marks the second straight off season that the Ducks have been in the news for the wrong reasons.

Alonso, a 20 year old from Los Gatos, California,  was coming back from a season long suspension after he was cited for drinking and driving in February 2010.  Apparently Alonso is being charged for burglar, trespassing and criminal mischief after a Eugene woman called the police and explained that Kiko was banging on her front door and demanding to be let in.

Coach Kelly has suspended Kiko from the team indefinitely, and has been quoted as saying he is very disappointed by the actions of his linebacker.  There has been no comment on his status moving forward, or if he will be given a third chance to prove himself.

Josh Huff has a sprained knee

Ducks fans collectively sighed in relief as the news that Josh Huff's knee injury is not serious and is only a sprained knee.  He was seen running without a brace and he reportedly said that he might try to play in the spring game.  Ducks fans have been left in suspense as the team has been quiet regarding the injury.  Huff was injured in an incident without contact, where he had to be helped off the field and could not put any weight on his leg.

Huff is going to be a major part of the Ducks' offense this coming year.  He is a 5'11 receiver who is strong at 207 lbs.  He has ran a 4.34 forty and plays just as fast or even faster.  Huff repeatedly showed amazing sight running in the open field.  He is most likely the new deep threat for the Ducks, but the Ducks will run screens for him, use him out of the back field, and on returns.  As a true sophomore he looks poised to have a huge season in 2011.

Oshay Dunmore commits to the Oregon Ducks

The Oregon Ducks have landed their first football recruit of the 2012 class, Oshay Dunmore.  Dunmore, from Newport, will stay in state and head to Eugene.  He is an athletic player who will most likely end up on offense, he excelled mostly as a running back in high school.  Oshay is 6'2 and almost 200 lbs, he has the frame of a wide receiver but he is athletic enough that he could also be developed into a corner or safety.  He is a nice first addition to the class of 2012.

Oregon Ducks WR Josh Huff Goes Down With Knee Injury

The Ducks' emerging sophomore WR Josh Huff went down during Friday's practice with an apparent knee injury suffered while diving for a ball and was seen grabbing his left knee with both hands. When he was helped off the field he was unable to put any weight on his leg.
There is still no official statement on the severity of or  the exact nature of the injury, but it is never a good sign when there is no contact and a player is injured like that.
Huff was a true freshman last season and was poised to be the 3rd starter behind the senior Tuinei and Junior Hoffman.  If Huff is indeed out fellow sophomore Nick Cole will take his place.
Huff's absence would be a big blow to Oregon's passing offense, he was going to be their deep threat because of his explosive athleticism.  Last year he showed he was one of the most explosive players in college football, he is a threat to take it all the way anytime he touches the ball.  I know Ducks' fans are all rooting for Mr. Huff right now.

The Oregon Ducks' 2011 Football Recruiting Class

De'Anthony Thomas Leads Oregon's 2011 Recruiting Class

We are just over a month away from the Ducks' spring game, so what can we expect from the incoming freshmen?  The Ducks' 2011 recruiting class is stocked with talent and athleticism, headlined by the recruit from southern California De'Anthony Thomas.  The Ducks also reached all the way out to Florida to grab the speedy WR Tacoi Sumler.  Chip Kelly has a lot of good things to say about this class,   especially about the linebackers and offensive linemen they signed. Overall, this class has been touted by scouts nation wide and will add the necessary depth for the next few years and the star talent for the future of the Ducks football program.  Here is the complete list of 2011 recruits compiled from ESPN's recruiting page and Rivals.

Recruit                      Position    HT    WT      40      Rivals Ranking       ESPN Ranking
Out of 10             Out of 100

Devon Blackmon       WR         6'0     180      4.4           4-Star- 6.0               4-Star- 83
           - Rivals has Blackmon ranked as a WR and ESPN ranks him as an athlete, either way Blackmon's explosiveness with the ball in his hands gives the Ducks' offense another versatile weapon.  He played quarterback in high school so he will be a work in progress and will most likely redshirt his freshman season.  He will be a perfect fit in Chip's offense using his passing ability for trick plays out of the backfield.

Tra Carson                RB           6'1     218      4.6           3-Star- 5.6               3-Star- 76
           - Carson will be the power back to complement the lightning backs.  Carson has a lot of size to bang through the offensive line, but he also has the speed to breakaway in the secondary.  He looks similar to Blount in his highlight video, the way he can move his feet for such a big man.  Tra ran for over 2000 yards his senior season and recorded 24 touchdowns.  It will take some time for Carson to see the field with all the depth the Ducks have at running back, but when he does get in the game his size will allow him to make an immediate impact, especially around the goal line.

Rahim Cassell             LB           6'1     215        -            3-Star- 5.6               3-Star- 79
-Cassell will be a solid player at the outside linebacker position.  He has the speed to get to the quarterback and he can also drop into coverage although this is an area he needs to improve on.  He is very good at sideline to sideline pursuit, and he is solid against the inside run.  In a few years he could be a pass-rushing threat similar to the recently departed Kenny Rowe.

Tyson Coleman           LB          6'2     220         -            3-Star- 5.7               4-Star- 79
-Coleman is a fast and an explosive hitter.  He could potentially fill in at strong safety or he could play the outside linebacker position.  He uses a consistently high motor and great pursuit skills to fly towards defenders from sideline to sideline.  His quick first step makes it very hard for blockers to stay in front of him.  It will be interesting to see what role Coleman develops into, but he has a lot of talent and potential to be a big contributor in years to come.

Jared Ebert (JC)         DT          6'5     285      4.8           4-Star- 5.8                    -
-Ebert is a JC transfer from Iowa Western C.C., he will most likely fill the huge void made by the departure of Brandon Bair.  The Ducks lost a lot of talent along their front line and they will be counting on the incumbents and Ebert to fill in this season.  Ebert is a very strong interior defender and is very good at clogging up the middle.  He has a big frame and his size could help the Ducks go up against bigger offensive lines in the SEC and other conferences.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu         DB         5'10    180      4.5           4-Star- 5.8               4-Star- 79
-Ifo is a very physical corner who can help out against the run and also has good ball skills.  He should fill in for Cliff Floyd once he takes his talents to the NFL.  He will most likely red-shirt next year to give him time to develop and improve his ability to get into his breaks on the ball.  He has a fast first step that allowed him to get away with poor technique in High School, but to be a good college player he will have to learn to stay lower on his back peddle so he has more burst into his break while the ball is in the air.   He is a good tackler in the open field and is also solid against the run.

James Euscher             OL         6'7      278       -              3-Star- 5.5               2-Star- 71
           - Euscher is a big body who will hopefully be an impact tackle in the future.  He has a lot of upside but will need a few years to develop.  He needs to work off of his quickness and breaks off the ball to guard against quick defenders.  He shows the work ethic to improve for the Ducks if he has the right coaching.

Jacob Fisher                 OL         6'7      270      5.2           3-Star- 5.7               3-Star- 77
-Fisher is a versatile player that really lacks a position right now.  He will most likely round into an offensive linemen because scouts think he has the frame to add a lot of bulk.  His versatility could allow him to possibly slip out on trick plays near the goal line and catch some touchdowns.  He has a lot of work to do if he wants to become a big time player, but he definitely shows the ability to get there.

Christian French        ATH        6'6      229      4.4           4-Star- 5.9               4-Star- 79
-French will most likely grow into a defensive end but he could play tight end as well.  He is freakishly athletic.  On defense he has shown the ability to get under defenders pads despite his tall frame.  He needs to improve his tackling fundamentals, mostly he tries to hit the offensive player as hard as possible and does not wrap up.  He will have to add a lot of muscle and weight, but he has the frame to support this change.  He could be a NFL DE prospect sooner than later if he spends some time in the weight room.

Carlyle Garrick           LB           6'2      205       -             3-Star- 5.5                3-Star- 75
-Garrick has a good combination of size and speed, but he is very raw as a line backer and needs a lot of coaching up to meet his potential.  He is a consistent and big hitting tackler and shows the ability to match up against tight ends in coverage.  He has enough speed to play the safety position if he does not add weight.  ESPN marks him as a potential sleeper.

Rodney Hardrick        LB           6'3      205      4.5           3-Star- 5.6               3-Star- 76
-Hardrick shows the athleticism necessary to be a productive linebacker in the NCAA.  He has a good nose for the ball and seems to always be around at the end of the play.  Rodney has shown the willingness to mix it up along the front line in running situations.  He needs to add weight and muscle to be a force at the collegiate level, but he shows the fundamentals and potential to be a good defensive player.

Tyler Johnstone          OL           6'6      260        -             4-Star- 5.8                3-Star- 78
-Johnstone is a very agile offensive lineman who will need to spend some time in the weight room before he spends any on the field.  His long arms and quick feet give him an advantage against defenders but right now he lacks the strength to compete.  He has shown the ability and aggressiveness to get down field to make second tier blocks on running plays which is perfect for the Ducks' running attack.  If he can get stronger to go along with the tenacity he shows as a blocker he will spend a lot of time on the Ducks' offensive line.

Sam Kamp                   DE           6'5     237        4.9          3-Star- 5.6              3-Star- 75
-Kamp is listed as a DE on Rivals and a DT on ESPN.  Either way he will help out on the defensive line, he is solid against the run and has learned to keep his pads low against smaller players.  He has trouble getting off blocks once he is engaged, shredding these blocks will be key in his progress.

B.J. Kelley                    WR          6'2     175         -            3-Star- 5.6               4-Star- 80
-Kelly gives the Ducks a tall target in the passing game with the speed to be a deep threat and the size to be a possession receiver.  He has long arms and better than average leaping ability, both of which allow him to win 50'50 balls more often than not.  He has soft hands and knows to catch the ball away from his body and is very proficient catching the ball over his shoulder.

Lake Koa-Ka'ai           DE           6'4     235         -             3-Star- 5.6               3-Star- 79
-Lake is a defender with a lot of upside.  He is good against the run and the pass and has a very large frame.  He is too skinny to play the position at this point of his career and will need to bulk up quite a bit.  He needs to work at being a more consistent tackler and getting out of blocks once engaged.

Colt Lyerla                  ATH         6'5     225        4.6          4-Star- 6.1               3-Star- 79
-Lyerla has been compared to Brian Urlacher at the LB position.  He could play multiple positions, DE, TE, or LB.  He also played running back in high school.  I think that he could make a big impact as an inside linebacker or at the tight end position.  He seems to have rare athletic ability and I think it would be a good decision to put him at a impact position.  Getting him the ball as a tight end could be a great option.

Marcus Mariota          QB            6'4     187        4.7          3-Star- 5.7               2-Star- 71
-Mariota is an athletic quarterback who can be a threat when running the ball or staying in the pocket.  He is tall enough to see over the defense and he has a strong enough arm to push the ball down the field.  His major flaw is consistency, he shows a lot of potential as a pocket passer but he does not always stay with the play or read the defense correctly. He also needs to adds some bulk to absorb some of the hits he will take in Oregon's offense.

Jamal Prater                OL           6'4      290        -              3-Star- 5.6             2-Star- 73
         - The Ducks were criticized for having such a small offensive line last season, Prater does not fit that mold.  He is a huge prospect, size wise, and he will have to develop his footwork and blocking technique.  Prater needs to improve his flexibility and all around strength, but he could be a big time player for the Ducks in a few years.

Tacoi Sumler               WR          5'8      151        4.4           4-Star- 5.8             4-Star- 81
-Despite Sumler's slight frame he should make a giant impact on the Ducks' offense.  The Ducks stole him away from the SEC and other Florida schools who wanted Sumler because he is one of the fastest prospects in the 2011 class.  He has great hands and has the route running abilities to get free.  He will fit perfectly in Chip's offense, I imagine he will be used a lot in WR screens and they could also bring him in the back field for reverses.  He will be a dynamic weapon if he adds a few pounds of muscle.

De'Anthony Thomas  ATH         5'9     160        4.4            5-Star- 6'1              4-Star- 84
-The addition of Thomas is big for a few reasons, the first being the versatility he brings to the field.  It is not certain whether he will be on offense or defense, he is a great running back but the Ducks' back field is already very crowded.  It is likely that he becomes a shut down corner for the Ducks.  The second reason is that the Ducks' stole him away from his hometown team USC.  This shows that the Ducks are becoming a powerful recruiting school (although there are some serious investigations looking into these recruitments).

Rahsaan Vaughn (JC) WR         6'2     190        4.4            4-Star- 5.8                      -
-Vaughn is a big time wide receiver with great speed.  His 6'2 frame has room to add muscle, but he should already step in and be a big contributer next season.  He will help ease the loss of Jeff Maehl, but he will have to work hard to learn the ins and outs of the complicated offense.

Anthony Wallace        LB            6'2     220        4.6             4-Star- 5.8             4-Star- 80
-Wallace is a strong linebacker who can punish either running backs or quarterbacks.  He is not afraid of contact and he likes punishing the opponents.  Wallace shows decent ability in coverage, although he will need to improve in this area.  Wallace will need to add a few pounds and work on his flexibility to be a top performer at the next level.  Anthony shows all the signs of being a huge impact player of the future.

Andre Yruretagoyena OL         6'5      258          -               4-Star- 5.8                4-Star-81
-Andre is going to be a great addition to Oregon's offensive front.  He needs to add some weight, but he has a big frame already.  He shows a nastiness when run blocking that will be perfect for Chip's scheme.  He has a lot of work to do on basic fundamentals, once these fundamentals are learned then he will be a big time player.

The Buckeyes, Tressell, In Trouble With NCAA Violations

Neither Pryor or Tressel will be available
for the beginning of OSU's 2011 season
NCAA violations continue to put the 2011 season in jeopardy as Tressel has been suspended for at least the first two games.

Back in December the Buckeyes got some bad news before their appearance in the Sugar Bowl.  Their star quarterback Terrelle Pryor had been found guilty of selling awards, autographed photos, and in the process accepting the improper benefits.

4 other players were also suspended;  running back Daniel Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas will join Pryor on the bench for the first five games.  They are being forced to repay from $1,000-2500 to charity to make up for the improper benefits.

At the time of the controversy, Jim Tressel is quoted saying  that "We as coaches feel the buck stops here," coach Jim Tressel said during the news conference. "We're the ones who need to make things even more crystal clear."  After saying this, Tressel and the Ohio State University athletic department decided that these five players should not be suspended until next season, and were made eligible to play in the Sugar Bowl.

Moving forward 3 months, and Ohio State again finds itself in the eye of the NCAA investigation.  This time the investigation will center around the Buckeye's coach Tressel.  It has been become known that Tressel knew about these violations by the players last April and failed to hold any party responsible.

Ohio State has made their own internal investigation, and a suggested punishment for Tressel has been offered.  He has been suspended the first 2 games by the university, he is also being fined $250,000 for not reporting the violations to the NCAA.  The NCAA is now conducting their own investigation and could opt to reject the suggested punishment by Ohio State and place further, more harsh, punishments on the coach and program.

Tressel was one of the most respected coaches in college football because of his success and loyalty to the Buckeyes, he has also not been in any trouble with the NCAA.  In his press conference he said that he did not give enough thought to the possible NCAA sanctions when he first was notified about the violations.  Tressel said that he did not want any pity for his punishment but said that he was saddened by the decision to suspend him.  The athletic coordinator stated that Tressel's job is safe and that the university has had no internal discussions of dismissing their coach.

I think that this situation is beginning to sound a little bit more severe and more harsh sanctions will be placed on the university.  I also think that Tressel's honesty comes into play here, when he said that "The buck stops here" and said that the coaches needed to take more responsibility he had already known about the situation for 8 months.  8 months is far and away long enough to punish the players and reinforce the rules, but nothing was done.  He said that he didn't give enough thought to possible NCAA sanctions, but Tressel is a smart coach and certainly knows the rules and regulations.  He should have known what would happen if this story broke out.

As it stands now, Tressel will miss the first 2 games of the 2011 season.  This is not really a punishment as the Buckeyes play Akron and Toledo, both teams that OSU should be able to beat soundly.  He conveniently returns for their first road game at the Miami Hurricanes.  The fourth game on the schedule is back at home against the Colorado Buffaloes.  Pyror and the 4 other players will also miss conference opponent Michigan State.

NCAA Investigates Possible Oregon Recruiting Violations

Oregon's 2010 top recruit Lache Seastrunk is in the center of
a NCAA probe for recruiting violations.
http://democratherald.com/sports/college/
article_99f5c5ea-b213-11df-bef7-001cc4c03286.html
Oregon faces a NCAA probe into recruiting violations.

The NCAA is investigating the involvement of trainer Willie Lyles in the recruitment of Oregon's 2010 top recruit Lache Seastrunk.  So far Oregon has maintained that the NCAA has had no communication with the school about any violations.

The probe centers around the implication that the trainer was payed $25,000 after Lache signed with the Ducks, choosing them over other Pac-10 rivals Cal, and USC.  Joe Schad is reporting that the Ducks admit to paying Lyles for his recruiting services, but they claim they have not broken any of the NCAA's recruiting laws.

Lyles was personally connected to Seastrunk, he was Lache's personal trainer and mentor in Temple, Texas.  Lyles also has a history of recruiting for the Ducks, but  this scenario seems to be different.  In Schad's report he sites a source which contends that the $25,000 dollars which was paid to Lyles was more than had been paid in previous recruiting jobs.  He was usually paid $16,500.  $9000 is a pretty big jump in salary.  One source said that the average price of high school film and recruiting is around $5000.

The NCAA will also investigate the relationship between Lyles and heisman candidate LeMichael James.  He has been quoted as calling himself James' trainer and advisor.

It should be noted that Lyles is not only a scout for Oregon.  He has ties to players that have signed with many Big-12 teams and SEC teams, along with Oregon's rival USC.

In Schad's story, he quotes Chip Kelly as saying, "Most programs purchase recruiting services, our compliance office is aware of it. Will has a recruiting service that met NCAA rules and we used him in 2010." Oregon has also maintained their stance of innocence and remain confident that they have not broken any recruiting laws.  So far Oregon's athletic department has not withheld any information when asked.  They have records of the payment made, and as Chip Kelly said, they believe this payment was reasonable within the NCAA guidelines.

So far this investigation is in the preliminary stages, and there is nothing to suggest that these investigations will negatively effect the Ducks' football program.

Looking Forward To The 2011 Oregon Ducks Football Squad

LaMichael James is poised to run through the competition for his
junior campaign as the Ducks look to return to the BCS championship
http://thenationalfootballreport.com/wp-content

The Oregon Ducks look poised to make another BCS bid in 2011.

As the Ducks' remarkable season came to an end the 2011 season started.  The Ducks turned their attention to the 2011 freshman class, and they made huge strides.  Rivals rated the Ducks' recruiting class 9th in the nation.  They snatched one of USC's most coveted recruits right from under their noses.  The 5'9, 160  pound speedster De'Anthony Thomas is rated one of the top athletes in the country.  He is a native of southern California, which makes it even more impressive that he signed with the Ducks.  Not only are the Ducks dominating the Pac 10 competition on the field, but it seems that they are now dominating the recruiting.  They signed another 5 star athlete who is from Hillsboro, OR.  Colt Lyerla has an impressive 6'5, 225 lb frame.  Rivals believes that he can play many positions at the collegiate level, he has the ability to play wide out, safety, or even linebacker and defensive end.  They also add 9 four star recruits, who most notably include WR Tacoi Sumler who is one of the fastest players in the country.  The Ducks may have also landed their future signal caller, Jerrard Randall the 8th ranked QB in the country, according to ESPN, is poised to join this class if he passes all academic requirements.  This class positions the Ducks to be a offensive powerhouse for years to come.

While it still remains to be seen if any of these incoming freshmen will make an impact on the field in 2011, the Ducks have an impressive roster full of returning talent, lead by Heisman candidate LaMichael James.  The Ducks bring back quarterback Darron Thomas who should really develop after being thrown into the fire after Masoli's dismissal last spring.  Playing well in the championship should give Thomas the confidence he needs to succeed this year, and also playing down the stretch when every game mattered should really improve his poise.  Kenjon Barner, LaMichael's key running mate also returns and maintains the 1-2 punch of the Ducks' backfield.  Red shirt freshman Lanche Seastrunk should get some opportunities as the 3rd string running back this year.  Seastrunk, who considered transferring after James' decision to return, is in the mold of Barner and James and will replace them as the lead back once the tandem departs for the NFL.

One of the Ducks' main concerns is the departure of key senior talent on the offensive line.  Because of Chip Kelly's system of playing 8-9 players on the offensive line this should not be a concern.  They will plug in 6 experienced senior offensive linemen along with 3 juniors.  At the wide receiver position the 6'5 senior Lavasier Tuninei returns to lead this talented group.  They are expecting  a breakout year from sophomore wideout Josh Huff, who made some explosive plays last season with his track-level speed. The senior tight end David Paulson rounds out what should be an even more explosive offense than last year, if that is even possible.

Defensively the Ducks bring back plenty of talent led by junior cornerback Cliff Harris.  Harris had a breakout year last year showing his explosive return ability and his big play ability as a ball-hawking cornerback.  In 2011 Harris will have to improve on his gambling for the big play because for as many big plays that he made he gave up just as many.  Strong safety Eddie Pleasant is returning for his senior campaign.  Pleasant will provide the senior leadership this group will need.  The big hitting free safety John Boyett is also returning.  Boyett, who has been a defensive leader for the Ducks since his freshman season, should flourish into an all Pac-12 player this year.  He is consistently in the right place to make big plays and always punishes receivers.

Oregon's front seven brings back plenty of senior talent.  They bring back Terrell Turner who is one of the team leaders in the weight room.  Junior linebacker Michael Clay was the teams top reserve at the position last season and he should step right into Mathew's position and produce right away as a starter.  Again, because of the system Chip uses many of these players are not stepping into action blind, they have plenty of game experience.  These aren't big name guys and Coach Aliotti will have to work hard this spring to work this defense into national championship quality.

The Ducks' special teams are set with 2010 4th team Pac-10 kicker Rob Beard, who will continuing his production next year.  Rice Jackson is also holding down the punting position.  Both are juniors who have started for at least one year and have experience in pressure situations.

The Ducks' 2011 season starts out against one of the top teams in the SEC, LSU.  The game is in Cowboys stadium, and this will be the one of the most important games of the season.  LSU was very good last year and will be very talented again, this should be a great game and an impressive way for the Ducks to start their season.  If they come away from this game with a victory Oregon's toughest games will be against USC and Stanford.  The Ducks have USCAutzen Stadium.

Overall, I think Coach Kelly and his staff have the Ducks ready for another national title campaign.  If they make it back to the top I believe that the Ducks will have the leadership, experience, and way more than enough talent to bring the national championship trophy home to Eugene.
